Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is failing to adequately protect its Jewish community, warning that antisemitism has risen to alarming levels across the country. Speaking in Toronto, Carney said Jewish Canadians are increasingly being targeted by hate crimes, harassment, and attacks on community institutions.
The prime minister noted that Jewish Canadians, who make up a small share of the population, were the victims of the majority of religion-motivated hate crimes reported in recent years. He cited incidents involving schools, synagogues, businesses, and community centres as evidence of a growing problem.
In response, the federal government has announced new measures to combat antisemitism, including increased security funding for faith-based institutions and the creation of an advisory council to address hate and discrimination. Carney said protecting Jewish Canadians is essential to maintaining Canada's values of inclusion, safety, and respect for all communities.
